A fellow blogger Emily has had a few challenges for the ladies. The first one last month was to post a self portrait. Since I missed that one here is my self portrait. Well, I wouldn't call it a portrait, but it's a self one for sure.
The second challenge was to share our 'how we met' stories. Here's mine and Chris': It was the summer of 1998 & I had graduated high school. My friend Malinda Pickup (Malinda Karpowitz) had come home from Utah for the summer. At that time Plano had a singles branch that she was attending. She invited me to a party at the home of fellow singles Chris and Ashley Peterson. I was kind of hesitant being so young, but ended up agreeing. She wanted me to check out this Chris guy that she thought was cute. So, we showed up at their house and Ashley answered the door. She looked so familiar and after chatting for a little bit we'd both worked at Discovery Zone like 2 years back. When I first saw Chris I thought he was cute. I loved his blue eyes! We had a fun night. It seemed as though Chris was trying to flirt with me, but I wasn't about to reciprocate when I knew Malinda was interested.
I went dated some other guys in the branch and one even told me I should go out with Chris. Kind of odd I know. I felt so comfortable around his family. So much that Ashley and I even went to look at rings before we'd really talked about marriage. She was pretty serious with a Chris as well. I just knew he was the ideal guy for me.
Chris finally got my number I think from this same guy and called me. Our first date was July 3rd. It didn't take long to move to the next level "holding hands" on July 4th. We saw each other every day after work and sometimes at lunch until the day I had to leave to go to Ricks College. He was going to BYU that fall and come to find out both of our grandparents lived in Springville UT. He was there to see me off from Springville as mom and dad drove me to Rexburg. I bawled the whole way up.
So, that semester we saw each other every weekend as well. Either I went to Utah or he came up. The weekend of Oct. 16 he said he wasn't going to be able to come up because he had to study for a midterm. My roommates and I planned a night on the town in Idaho Falls (I know...wild and crazy Idaho Falls!). I distinctly remember them telling me to wear something cute. We decided to park at the temple and first take a walk along the Snake River. We crossed the street and as I looked up ahead there he was walking towards us with a single red rose in hand. I was awestruck. We had looked at rings previously, but I didn't expect this at all. I was thinking he'd surprise me around my birthday in November. He and my roommates had this planned for weeks. They walked off and he pulled me beneath a beautiful tree and got down on one knee. It was a huge surprise. To this day he's been great at surprising me.

After that we drove to a pay phone (back then we didn't have cell phones) to call our parents. Since we were at different colleges we decided to go home at Christmas, get married on Feb. 19, 1999 & he would finish school in Texas. And the rest is history.
-The day of my wedding Brianne and Shelly surprised me and showed up at the temple!

We were pretty nice to each other when we cut the cake!
P.S. Malinda and I are still the best of friends! She found a great man and they now have 3 kids as well.

What a fun story! I love Chris' proposal story, it sounds so sweet. :) Ashley told me once that she knew you and Chris would get married before you did! Sounds like you married into a fun family, I sure love having Ashley in our neighborhood!
Such a cute story! I love that Ashley is a part of your story. So special! Your pictures were so cute, thanks for sharing!
That is so cool! You know I have been meaning to ask you how you guys met but keep forgetting. I thought you guys met at Ricks but then my dad said he taught Chris in High School...anyway small world!!!
That was so fun surprising you like that. The only thing I remember about you and Chris dating is when I went to a preseason Cowboys game with you two. You hadn't been dating long, but you were already REALLY into each other. I felt like such a third-wheel, but it was fun getting to know Chris and seeing you so giddy!
How fun! I had no idea how ya'll met. Fun
so great. who knew that a man could be so creative and romantic. wish he could write a book about it.
Ya so trying to keep my mouth shut for a week b/f he proposed i think was the hardest thing i had to do at the age of 12!!!!! I remember when Chris told us what he was going to do and i thought it was soooo romantic!

Fun pictures! Thanks for sharing. That is so cute how Chris surprised you by coming up to Idaho Falls.
We are coming to Texas from June 15-23, so I guess we are going to miss each other. Hopefully when we come in September for Brian's wedding we can get together. It would be fun to get our Austins together!
well, Aleshia I seem to think I've changed a bunch. Maybe not so much physically (except my hair thank goodness) but definately my personality.
