Ok ladies, let's hear your opinion on this article. Personally I totally agree with it. It's interesting how parents are these days, when we survived growing up getting hurt and having germs on us!

Just to point out my view, Colin has a friend at school and on his baseball team that his parents won't allow a swing set in their backyard. (Now if anyone reading has the same feelings I'm not here to judge...just state my opinion) Their reason is because the kids could get hurt. PLEASE. I'm surprised they haven't gone to the school and said that he can't play on the playground. Kids are going to get hurt. Then these same parents expect him to not be afraid of the baseball and to be more aggressive on the soccer field. What do they expect when they keep him from intense and confrontational situations at all other times. It's just mind-boggling to me. Maybe the older couples are before they have kids, their memory of how kids should behave is forgotten. Anyways, there is my beef for today.

I didn't get through it all, but from what I read I totally agree as well. I've actually even read that we're "too" clean now with all our disinfectants ect that kids are getting more sick b/c their immune systems have nothing to build up against! I was talking to someone the other night whose son broke his leg walking so their theory now is - if he can break it just walking why should we keep him from doing anything else? I mean, its typical to not want your child to get hurt but protecting them from everything can hurt them in other ways.
My sister wrote a thesis which stated that becuase of antibacterial soaps (sparys, gels and the such), the common bacteria is morphing into worse strands, so because of our efforts to be extra clean and "antibacterialized" ( I so made that word up) we have in a sense made things worse for ourselves. I am all about safety, but sometimes you have to scrape your knees up a little but when you are a kid. (Remember the character from Frasier named Niles?? We don't all want to grow up to be the Niles of the world.) I remember a time when trampolines didn't have nets, cups didn't have lids (sippys), and we all used plain old soap. We all survived, right? That's my two cents anyway.
I don't have kids but from a teachers stand point...it is a whole lot easier to have kids that can just walk away from a few falls and scrapes than flipping out when they see a small spot of red!!!
I'm with you Mindy, I think it's totally okay for kids to get hurt every now and then. Not that I WANT my child to get hurt or fail in anyway, but they are definately learning moments. I totally believe that "it is better to be safe than sorry," but only to a certain point. Kids ARE going to get hurt and they ARE going to fail at things sometimes. I think the real issue is, are they going to give up the second they get hurt or keep on going?
